“On Google” means three different things
When someone in Vancouver searches “web designer near me” or “plumber Kitsilano,” they see three distinct kinds of result. Getting found means understanding which one you’re aiming for — because they’re won in completely different ways.
Aim for the top two first. They’re free, and they’re where trust is built.
Start with your Google Business Profile
If you do one thing, do this. Your Google Business Profile (the free listing behind the map pack) is the fastest, highest-impact win in local search — and most Vancouver businesses have one that’s half-finished or unclaimed. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field:
- Claim and verify the listing so you control it — not an old agency or an auto-generated placeholder.
- Pick the most accurate primary category. “Website designer” ranks you differently than “marketing agency.” Be specific and correct.
- Match your details to your website exactly — same business name, address (or service area), phone and hours, character for character.
- Set your service area if you go to customers — list the neighbourhoods and cities you actually serve.
- Add real photos, and keep adding them. Profiles with fresh, genuine images get noticeably more clicks and calls.
- Use posts and Q&A to stay active. Google rewards a profile that looks alive.
What your website has to do
The map pack gets you seen; your website is what convinces Google you’re relevant — and convinces the visitor to actually call. A few site-side signals do most of the work:
- Say where you are, on the page. Put your city and the neighbourhoods you serve into real headings and copy — not hidden, just naturally present. Google can’t rank you for “Vancouver” if the word never appears.
- Give every service its own page. One page per thing you offer, each answering what it is, who it’s for and what it costs to think about. One vague “Services” page ranks for nothing.
- Be genuinely fast and mobile. Google measures real load speed (Core Web Vitals) and mobile usability, and most local searches happen on a phone. A slow site loses rankings and customers.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data. This is invisible code that tells Google your name, address, hours and area in a format it trusts — and it powers the rich details that show up beside your listing.
- Make sure Google can actually read it. A submitted sitemap, clean HTTPS, and content that isn’t trapped behind heavy scripts. If Google can’t crawl a page, nothing else matters.
Reviews are ranking fuel
Reviews do double duty: they’re one of the strongest signals in the map pack, and they’re the deciding factor when a searcher picks between the three businesses they see. A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews beats a pile of old ones. The playbook is simple — ask every happy customer, make it one tap (share your review link), and reply to every review, good or bad. What you must never do is buy fake reviews: Google filters and penalises them, and it’s dishonest to the people trusting them. Earn them for real.
The local SEO checklist
Everything above, in order of impact. Work down the list — the first few matter most, and they’re free.
01Claim & verify your Google Business Profile
The highest-impact, zero-cost move. Get control of the listing and complete every field.
02Choose the right primary category
Be specific and accurate. It’s one of the biggest factors in which searches you appear for.
03Keep your NAP identical everywhere
Name, Address, Phone — exactly the same on your site, your Profile and every listing. Mismatches quietly cost you rankings.
04Add real photos — and keep adding
Genuine, current images lift clicks and calls. A stale, photo-less profile looks closed.
05Earn reviews and reply to them all
Ask every happy customer, make it one tap, respond to each one. Recent and real beats old and many.
06Put your city & neighbourhoods on the page
Vancouver, Burnaby, the North Shore — wherever you work, say it in real copy and headings, not hidden text.
07Give every service its own page
One page per offering, each answering a real question. It’s how you rank for more than just your business name.
08Add LocalBusiness schema
Structured data that hands Google your details in a format it trusts. Standard on any properly built site.
09Be fast and mobile
Green Core Web Vitals and a phone-first layout. Speed is both a ranking signal and a conversion one.
10Get listed where locals look
A handful of accurate, reputable directories — consistent details everywhere. Quality and consistency, never spammy blasts.
What’s a waste of money
Local SEO attracts more snake oil than almost any other small-business service. Skip all of this — it does nothing, or actively gets you penalised:
- Anyone “guaranteeing #1 on Google.” Nobody controls the ranking. A guarantee is the surest sign of a scam.
- Buying backlinks or link packages. Cheap bought links are exactly what Google’s spam systems hunt for. They hurt, not help.
- Fake or incentivised reviews. Filtered, penalised, and dishonest. Not worth it at any price.
- Keyword stuffing. Cramming “Vancouver web design” into every sentence reads as spam to Google and to humans.
- Directory-blast services. Getting listed on 500 junk directories overnight is a spam signal, not a strategy.
Found by design.
Here’s the difference between hiring an “SEO company” and building it right the first time. Every site I build ships with the technical half of local SEO already done — so you launch findable instead of needing a rescue in six months:
All-green speed, clean structure, local schema, and real service pages — standard.
Hand-written code that loads fast on a phone, LocalBusiness structured data, a proper sitemap, and city and service pages that actually target how people search — plus help getting your Google Business Profile set up right. No monthly SEO retainer required to be found for the basics. And because I’m a solo Vancouver studio, it’s built to be the affordable option — every project under $15,000.
Holding a quote from an agency or “SEO specialist”? Bring me any certified, like-for-like written quote — tell me exactly what you want built — and once I’ve reviewed it, your JMD price comes in below it, same scope, nothing trimmed. You physically cannot pay more with me than with someone else.
How long it actually takes
Be wary of anyone who promises overnight results. A verified Google Business Profile can show in the map within days to a few weeks. Ranking in the organic blue links is slower — usually two to six months of a fast, well-structured site plus reviews and steady local content. The businesses that win aren’t the ones who spent the most; they’re the ones who set the foundation right and stayed consistent. Start with the free wins, get the site built properly, and let it compound.
Where to go next
SEO is one piece of a site that works. If you’re still weighing the build itself, see what JMD builds (SEO is baked into every project), what a site actually costs in Vancouver, the realistic build timeline, and the ten questions to ask before hiring anyone.
Quick answers
How long does it take to show up on Google?
A verified Google Business Profile can appear in the local map within days to a few weeks. Ranking well in the regular organic results is slower — usually two to six months of a fast, well-structured site plus reviews and local content. Anyone promising instant #1 rankings is selling ads or selling nonsense.
Do I need to pay for Google Ads to rank?
No. Google Business Profile and organic search are both free and drive most local clicks. Ads buy instant visibility at the very top, but you disappear the moment you stop paying. Spend first on a fast site, a complete Business Profile and reviews — then test ads once those are working.
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes — creating, verifying and managing it costs nothing, and it’s the single biggest lever for getting a local business found. Google never charges to appear in the map pack or to add photos, posts, hours or review replies.
Will a new website hurt my Google rankings?
Only if it’s done carelessly. Rankings drop when a rebuild changes URLs without redirects, loses content, or launches slower than before. Done properly — old URLs mapped to new ones, content preserved, speed improved — a rebuild usually helps. JMD handles migrations exactly this way.
Can you guarantee the #1 spot on Google?
No honest provider can — the ranking is competitive and always changing, and nobody controls it. What we can do is build the site so every signal Google checks is in your favour: fast, mobile, well-structured, with local pages and schema, plus help setting your Business Profile up right.
